Basketball has been an accepted part of the American
scene, but for athletes at the pre-sixth grade level age is relatively
new and a bit controversial. About a decade ago, I read an article
that pointed out some of the potentially serious drawbacks,
emphasizing not only the development of "win at all cost" pressures
but the possibility of hazardous effects of injuries on children whose
bones are not yet fully formed.
More recent criticism has been leveled, and psychologists have been
joined by high school and college coaches who claim that poor coaching
in these junior leagues teaches mistakes that are sometimes difficult
to unlearn in later development
The Guide to Coaching
Sport's objective is to "train the teachers" so that you, as
parent, can help your child develop basketball skills. You will learn new
techniques and drills that will enhance your child's ability to be
successful. We cover practice organization, coaching philosophy,
shooting, passing, dribbling, and other fundamentals. We do all of
this with one underlying emphasis: MAKE THE GAME FUN!
Our goal is not to turn
your young player into a professional, but to give him or her the
tools for success that will make the game more enjoyable for the both
of you. |
